Patients with end-stage renal disease confronts continuos stress due to diease and hemodialysis procedure, although they receive safe and effective treatment by development of hemodialysis technology today. They experience many stressors and usually their quality of life is low. Because end- stage renal disease without renal transplant is incurable and irreversible and their survival depends upon dialysis machine which often cause complications and limitation in foods, fluid intake and activities. They often loose their health resources which enable them to adapt to diease, due to decreased financial resources by shrinked social and occupational activities, due to changes in roles and responsibility as a family members due to decreased ability to achieve long- term life goal. This study was conducted to identify the factors affecting quality of life patients on hemodialysis. And this study used empowerment model by Jones & Meleis(1993) as a theoretical framework which theorized quality of life is influenced social support as resource. The subjects of this study were 107 patients on hemodialysis who visited hospitals at Cheongju city and Seoul city. The variables and instruments used for data collection in this study were as follows: 1) Instruments measuring self-esteem, percieved social support, self -efficacy and quality of life were self-reported Likert type questionnaire which were adapted from previous studies and modified by authors to be fit for the subjects. 2) Percieved stress scale were developed by author. Reliability test of Cronbach's α of the scales ranged between .70-.97. Data were analyzed with SPSS PC?? program with percentage, Pearson correlation and multiple regression according to characteristics of variables. The results were as follows : 1. Percieved stress was significantly negative correlated with quality of life of patients on hemodialysis. 2. Self-esteem was significantly correlated with quality of life of patients on hemodialysis. 3. Percieved social support was significantly correlated with quality of life of patients on hemodialysis. 4. Self- efficacy was significantly correlated with quality of life patients on hemodialysis. 5. Percieved stress was significantly negative correlated with self-esteem, percieved social support and self-efficacy. 6. Self-esteem was significantly correlated with percieved social support and self-efficacy. 7. Percieved social support was significantly correlated with self-efficacy. 8. Quality of life patients on hemodialysis was 56.85% explained by percieved stress, self-esteem, percieved social support and self-efficacy. And it was significant. The most significant variable was percieved social support. From the above results, it can be concluded that 1) This study results could be available to improve quality of life and to promote self-esteem, percieved social support and self-efficacy and to decrease percieved stress of patients on hemodialysis. 2) Theoretical framework of this study using empowermwnt model of Jones and Meleis was tested by correlation between quality of life and percieved stress and self-esteem, percieved social support and self-efficacy as health resources. The validity of empowerment model could be established. Thus empowerment model could be available as nursing intervention model.
